Opening a new franchise location is exciting, and the marketing often gets rushed. A website goes up, a Google listing gets claimed, and everyone moves on to the next thing. Months later the location isn’t showing up on the map, the brand’s listings don’t match, and the owner is paying for ads to make up for it.
Franchise SEO is different from SEO for a single business. When it’s set up right, every location benefits from the brand’s strength and from its own local presence. When it’s set up wrong, the locations compete with each other, confuse Google, and leave customers calling the wrong number.
Why franchises are harder to get right
A franchise has two jobs at once. The brand needs to look consistent and trustworthy everywhere. Each location also has to win in its own city, against local competitors, in the map pack. That tension creates problems that independent businesses never face:
- Duplicate content. Copying the same text onto dozens of location pages tells Google none of them are special.
- Inconsistent business information. Different names, phone numbers and addresses across directories weaken trust with Google and with AI search tools.
- Locations competing with each other. Without a clear structure, two nearby locations can end up fighting for the same searches.
- Uneven Google Business Profiles. Some locations are active and full of reviews while others sit empty or unclaimed.
The foundation: set it up right the first time
Most franchise SEO problems trace back to decisions made on day one. These are the pieces that matter most.
1. A clear site structure
Give every location its own page, with its own address, service area, team, photos, reviews and local details, rather than one template with the city name swapped out. The brand site, the location pages and the service pages should link together in a way that’s easy for people and search engines to follow.
2. One consistent set of business information
Your business name, address and phone number should match everywhere, including your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory. Even small differences, like “Suite” versus “Ste,” can hurt trust. This consistency is also what AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews rely on when deciding which businesses to recommend.
3. A Google Business Profile for every location
For a local customer, the Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see. Each location needs its own claimed, verified and complete profile with the right categories, services, hours, photos and a steady flow of reviews, all linked to that location’s page and not just the home page.
4. Reviews managed location by location
Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call. A simple process for asking for reviews and responding to them, run at the location level with brand guidelines behind it, makes a visible difference.
5. Technical basics and structured data
Fast, mobile-friendly pages and proper schema markup help Google and AI tools understand which locations you have, where they are and what they do.
Why AI search makes this even more important
Search is changing. More people now get answers directly from AI Overviews and AI assistants that recommend a business by name. Those tools favor businesses with clear, consistent information, strong reviews and helpful local content. A franchise with a messy setup is easy for AI to skip. A franchise with a clean one is easy to recommend.
Why we know this world well
Franchise SEO is where Apex Vicinity started. Our founder, Tony Jordan, spent two years as the SEO Manager for more than 270 Glass Doctor franchise websites across the U.S. and Canada at The Dwyer Group. He worked directly with franchisees, supervised a team of SEO coordinators, ran performance calls, and trained both corporate staff and franchisees on SEO best practices. Since then, Apex Vicinity has worked with 225+ franchises across the U.S. and Canada.
That experience taught us what separates franchise locations that grow from the ones that stall, and it’s almost always the setup.
