More customers are skipping the search results page and simply asking an AI tool: “Who is a good HVAC company near me?” or “Which roofer should I call after a storm?” The answer often names specific businesses. If you want yours to be one of them, there are practical steps you can take.
A quick, honest note first: nobody can guarantee a mention in ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews, and the tools change often. What you can do is make your business easy to find, easy to understand and easy to trust. This checklist covers the things that matter most.
1. Make your business information identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should be exactly the same on your website, your Google Business Profile, Facebook, Yelp, Better Business Bureau, industry directories and anywhere else you are listed. If one place says “Smith Roofing LLC” and another says “Smith Roofing & Exteriors,” AI tools may not be sure they are the same business. Choose one version and fix the rest.
2. Fully complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is one of the most trusted local sources there is. Fill out every section: primary and secondary categories, services, service areas, hours, photos, description and website link. Keep it updated and add posts now and then. A thin or abandoned profile gives these tools little to work with.
3. Answer real customer questions in plain language
AI tools are built to answer questions, so give them good answers to quote. Think about what customers actually ask you on the phone:
- How much does a roof replacement usually cost, and what affects the price?
- Do you offer emergency service?
- What areas do you serve?
- How long does the job take?
- Are you licensed and insured?
Put these on your service pages in a short FAQ, written the way you would explain it to a customer. Be direct and specific. Avoid jargon, and avoid making claims you cannot back up.
4. Add schema markup
Schema is hidden code that tells search tools exactly what is on your page: that you are a local business, what you do, where you are, your hours and your FAQs. It does not change how your page looks to visitors, but it removes guesswork for the machines reading it. Local business schema and FAQ schema are good places to start. If this sounds technical, it is something your web or SEO partner can add for you.
5. Earn reviews that describe the work
Reviews are some of the most useful information available about your business. Ask every satisfied customer, and make it easy with a direct link. Gentle prompts such as “feel free to mention the service we did and your city” lead to reviews that say things like “replaced our furnace in McKinney.” Never write fake reviews or offer to pay for positive ones. Reply to every review, which shows you are engaged and gives you another chance to mention what you do.
6. Publish helpful local content
Write pages and posts that show real local knowledge: common problems in your area, how weather affects homes there, and projects you have completed. A page about your work in a specific city should have genuine details, not just the city name dropped into a template. This kind of content shows that you actually serve the area.
7. Build mentions and citations
Being mentioned on other trustworthy sites helps tools confirm you are a real, established business. Think local chambers of commerce, trade associations, supplier and manufacturer pages, local news or community sponsorships, and well-known directories. Focus on quality and accuracy rather than quantity.
8. Keep everything current
Old phone numbers, former addresses and outdated services create confusion that can stick around for a long time. Whenever something changes, update your website, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings together. Review them on a regular schedule.
